It puts you in a different workflow. "Save as" lets you work on things first 
and then only save when you are happy with the results. But you have to 
remember to save.

The new "versions" workflow assumes you are already invested in the document 
but might have different versions of it that you are working with. But it is 
less accommodating for people who want to do "funny things" with the document.

The new way is more modern as it helps the computer get out of the way for 
commonly done things. It takes some getting used to after 30+ years of working 
the old way.
