This question should be solved as now. As per the rule, HUD is invoked with alt( frankly i admit i didnot use Ubuntu 12.04) . But u should respect the fact that there is option to set the HUD binding to ctrl in the settings manager.
The open source is based around choice. the canonical might give the default, but it also respect us by providing the choices. U can modify the HUD and be a complete control of YOUR system ;) May be there are more persons who r comfortable with Alt than those with ctrl ;).
