I don't have any experience with HUD (upgrade issues :\) but I find this option less taxing on performance and more intuitive in the sense that it can be visually found rather than making the average user discover all the command shortcuts that make ubuntu great. I'm sure this will foster another healthy debate on the mailing list :D
