i observe the same problem with clean install of 10.04 on a fujitsu stylistic 
tablet (not a thinkpad).
(it worked under older ubuntu versions ok)

and i have installed the patch from 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes.

the system is up-to-date. there is no xorg.conf file present. what else
do you need to know?
