The system hangs at the plymouth boot screen (no login prompt) whenever fglrx is installed. I can ssh into the box and top shows Xorg running continually with 100% CPU. (See comment 4) I filed bug 534813 against the 8.10 release for the same reason; I upgraded to Lucid on hearing there were new fglrx drivers that better supported my GPU.
