Before installing fglrx I removed all /etc/X11/xorg.conf files, as well
as everything in the /etc/ati directory for a clean reinstall.

fglrx was removed with a
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx
command from a remote ssh session after a reboot and hang.

I hope you have some ideas on what is going wrong here. I guess
somebody has to feel the pain of trying a bleeding edge GPU for the
first time.
