After following the steps above and re-installing a few times the ATI driver is working for 2D/3D; however the function keys for brightness on my notebook (Sony) are no longer working. (They worked with Karmic + ATI drivers)
>From dmesg: [ 8.403523] sony-laptop: brightness ignored, must be controlled by ACPI video driver I forget the command but the notebook is seeing the fn+F5 and fn+F6 commands.
