I can confirm the random freeze behavior with Ubuntu 9.10 on a Toshiba 10 Satellite, just freshly installed. Started googling the problem and found this bug report.
X freezes (gnome) from time to time and only a full power-reboot fixes the problem. Mouse can be moved but nothing else. Can't access ttys with Ctrl+Alt+F1 , .... , Sound still works (had internet radio on).
