Leonard: I have all of the nvidia*185* packages installed, and my card is listed as supported. All packages installed without issue, the module built successfully, etc. If I knew how to get more information about why the module was not loading, that would be helpful. I actually never get a "low graphics mode" message; kdm runs but X fails to start (aborts) because it can't load the nvidia driver. When I remove the xorg.conf file which nvidia-xconfig creates, X and KDM start correctly, using the NV driver. I haven't yet tried going through this involved procedure (which, of course, shouldn't be necessary) to install the latest one directly from NVidia: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3107406.0 So sorry to hear you haven't solved the issue. My Karmic install(fresh) still randomly will start in low graphics mode but can get to Xwindows using startx or sometimes just waiting before logging in; a real PITA and nuisance that I live with. It seems almost that the driver is not loaded on a timely basis. Just a wild ass guess but I wonder if adding a modprobe command for the module in question into rc.local might help. Wouldn't hurt to try it as it is easily removed from the cli. Sad, but Karmic still has a few bugs to be solved. Another thing I did was to remove all nvidia drivers except the *.185 but don't really know if that had any effect. JFYI, I only have these installed: i A nvidia-185-kernel-source i A nvidia-185-libvdpau i nvidia-185-modaliases i nvidia-glx-185 i A nvidia-settings i xserver-xorg-video-nv The first time I was able to boot up without the low graphics message, AIR, I got the message from nvidia-settings to run nvidia-xconfig(which I thought had been discredited and removed) and running it worked on the next boot. I had also rmed xserver-xorg-video-nv because I kept getting messages suggesting the nv driver was being used. I later put it back due to comments from NoOp. Just relating my comments which probably wont help. My card worked flawlessly on all versions of Ubuntu(GeForce 9400GT) up and until the last kernel upgrade which included upgrades of the nvidia drivers also. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help but sometimes you just have to do trial and error on the new releases and file bug reports. So, good luck with your efforts.
