On upgrading today from 8.04 (Kubuntu) directly to 9.10 (Kubuntu
alternate install i386) I have the same problem. Nvidia driver was
working correctly pre-upgrade, but the kernel module now won't load. NV
works. I've tried the 2 most recent drivers recommended by envyng, with
the same result. The xorg.conf is being generated by nvidia-xconfig.
When that config is deleted, x.org starts correctly, using the NV
driver.
