The xserver-no-backfill ppa is now also available for Karmic. ( http://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/xserver-no-backfill ) Works with my Mobility Radeon 3650 HD pretty well. You may have to force version to get it working (Synaptic>Package>Force version on 'xserver-xorg-core')
