I would imagine that my problem is related here: the OpenGL screensaver BlinkBox has, on numerous occasions, appeared to cause Compiz to freak out and die after a period of usage (ie, not immediately when the screensaver starts up, but after a while, when I come back to my machine, it appears to be locked up). Sometimes I can get my machine back into a decent state by turning off compiz and turning it back on again. Sometimes X is so unresponsive that I have to restart gdm. Once, the whole machine appeared to be completely locked up and I had to reboot.
I didn't have this issue with Jaunty -- but it may be related rather to the drivers? I've noticed some people having issues with the nvidia 185 drivers (and we can't install the previously working 180 drivers because it's just a dummy package ): ). I'm about to try installing the 173 drivers to see if that fixes the problem.
