Still weird. The only Gnome extensions active are the follwoing ones
from the Ubuntu repository:

gnome-shell-extension-disconnect-wifi
gnome-shell-extension-top-icons-plus
gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock

I am still facing the freezing issues, but only if my Dell XPS13
notebook goes into S3 suspend for quite some time (like more than 5
minutes).

I changed that behavior to S2 instead (removed "mem_sleep_default=deep"
from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in grub config).

Now even after more than 5 minutes of hibernation there wasn't any
freezing.

Suspending into S2 is just for debugging exercises and currently not a
permanent solution as S2 significantly drains the battery (see
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=199689).
