Hi! Don't want to disappointing anyone but the solution provided by @pads doesn't work for everyone.
1) for legacy cards (2xxx-4xxx) does indeed work, but solution 2) only works for users with only a AMD/ATI GPU. Anyone who has a ATI/Intel hybrid card is stuck with the open source ones. The ATI/Intel Hybrids still seem to suffer from a regression to Ubuntu 12.04 and the AMD Catalyst 12.6 drivers. I have just tried the AMD Catalyst 12.11 beta driver fresh out the press at AMD and it still doesen't work for me. I have a AMD Radeon HD 6490M with an integrated Intel 3000 HD card running.
