My Ubuntu AMD64 machine was also seeing hard lockups, with 9800GT video card. Running Ubuntu 12.04 (3.2.0-31-generic). After trying to the latest Nvidia Driver (Driver Version: 304.51), without success I switched video cards (6600GT)
Now no lockups after 3 days but I am seeing the following "NEW" logs in the kern.log. Not sure if this is related but maybe the following logs in kern.log would cause my 9800GT to fall of the bus and cause a hard lock. http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/debian-ubuntu-rhel-fedora-linux-nvidia-nvrm-gpu-fallen-off-bus/ kern.log ...
