On a Thinkpad W530, this behavior started to occur after about 2 weeks of what I would say normal use (w/ three monitors). Compiz would crash constantly before this lockup occured. When reverting to Ubuntu 2D, no such behavior is observed. If I log into an Ubuntu session, this will occur within minutes.
