Like danrgmc above in comment #120, I just tried nvidia driver v302.17 also (via xorg-edgers ppa) but found it seg faulted within a couple of hours. My 8600 GT card has worked fine for years with ubuntu but this seg fault started with Ubuntu 12.04 at nvidia v295.40 and has occurred for all the v295.* and v302.* versions that Nvidia have released since. Luckily the nouveau driver works fine for me (in 3d Unity and Gnome Shell).
This bug has been reported various places in launchpad in many guises (most users don't understand what the bug is - they just get logged out of their DE) and has been reported all over the forums etc but I can not recall anywhere where Canonical and/or Nvidia acknowledge that they recognise this serious bug and are working on a fix. Can somebody at Canonical please reassure us that this issue is being actively looked at by somebody? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 Title: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/973096/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
