I'm having the same problem too. Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit NVIDIA Corporation G80 [GeForce 8800 GTX] (rev a2)
I was having problems with the 290.40 driver so i added x-swat ppa. I'm now on 295.53. With the 290.40 driver i couldn't log into either Unity or Gnome shell. 295.53 solved that problem but i'm having random xorg crashes that bring me to the log in screen. I have lost some work because of this. I have tried the open source driver but i have problems setting up my dual monitor set up with them so i am hoping that this problem gets fixed soon. Is this an issue with the drivers or is it a Ubuntu problem?
