Regarding the workaround in response #13: My GeForce Go 7300 card is now able to run Unity 3d with nvidia-current and the change to /etc/environment from the comment. So it may not be necessary to switch to the nouveau driver, at least for this card, and it may not be necessary to use the 173 driver. I'm not sure when the last time was that I could use nvidia-current -- I have been having to use 173 for several releases now. Not sure yet what performance will be like, but so far so good.
