I have the same problem, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and display hanged. Un-installed the NVIDIA driver and it works fine. Faced a similar problem after installing Ubuntu 11.10, but could resolve it by installing NVIDIA 173 version. But the installation for the same fails with Ubuntu 12.04. Hope the dependencies for NVIDIA 173 driver on Ubuntu 12.04 are resolved soon.
