I'm now using Ubuntu 11.10 and the issue does not occur with kernel 3.0.0-12 or 3.0.0-13. I resolved it in Ubuntu 11.04 by installing a mainline kernel (approx 3.1), which I've since disabled in favor of the kernel released with 11.10.
