Thanks Steffen & klerfayt! I actually got it working under Steffen's instructions: Purge fglrx, install the debs generated. Re-boot into recovery (to avoid screen blank) and then resume normal boot.
This makes nearly everything look smooth. The fonts sometimes are blurred and in italic on hover, but it's on and off and doesn't really bother me. Thanks for all your help. Will this be marked as available when the fix is out?
