Hi, I have beeb reading your post regarding not beeb able to get any apps or file bar on the screen, you might want to try the 2d unity options as i had the same problem when i upgraded, after doing a bit of digging i found in some cases the graphics card was not supports for 11.10 and that a download of the 2d unitty was needed. Once i down loaded it i rebooted and at the log in screen there is an option button, pressing that shows a list of login types with the option for unity 2d. on selecting that and logging in i found my apps showed again.
