When you say the desktop is gone do you get the normal logon screen
and then the problem is after logon?
Do you mean the complete desktop is gone or just the launcher and
panel? What exactly do you see on the screen?
What happens if you do Ctrl+Alt+T

Ok, a bit more,when I open a terminal using Ctrl+Alt+T and enter unity
--reset it says unity-panel-service: no process found, goes through a
few things of initializing, and stops and hangs
