If you're already proficient, you only need the exams, which are of the order of £100 IIRC (and maybe a £30 book). The Ubuntu course is just the LPI one with an extra exam; I'd imagine that most places that ascribe much importance to the Ubuntu course ascribe much the same to just the LPI bit.
