Just tried.

Key Combo Tried = Result
-----
3 = 3
Shift-3 = £
\ = \
Shift-\ = |

Could it actually be a bug in the mappings? I would assume anyone
developing scripts would need to use it and lots of programming
languages use it as a comment.
