I don't have enough pdf's for that to be a problem - but there's always a hidden thumbnails subdirectory in every home directory. And photos are fast to load the saved thumbnails every time and that's the same process. The only slight annoyance is when I plug my camera in. It takes ages to create the thumbnails from the SD card images, but they are essential to have.
