Tor sets the http_proxy variable so that the web browser can use the Tor
network, which is not fast enough for reliable browsing in my experience.
It's also a fairly important point to include when you're reporting a
problem as it's not a standard aspect of your internet setup.

An anonymising SSL VPN or proxy may be more what you're looking for. I don't
have recommendations but look for Proxify or Megaproxy.
