Some applications that access the Internet will acknowledge this and others don't, and if it's set to a non-existent or unreachable address, some connectivity will fail and some will work. I found, for example, for reasons too complex to get into now, that Google Earth will use it and that Firefox uses its own setting, so if it happens again, open a terminal and type 'env | grep HTTP_PROXY' and see if there's anything set for it.
