I use GMail and I see no option to 'mute' threads. A quick google search shows that this is possible using the 'm' key. However I apply filters to all my mailling lists so they skip my inbox immediately. It would be nice to automatically mark threads as read if they are 'muted' but I imagine this feature is not available.
