I have a desktop computer running Ubuntu 9.04 which I am setting up to
use mainly to process digital photographic images. My plan is to use a
card reader rather than having to take the camera to the computer each
time I want to download the photographs. However, most of the time, the
computer refuses to recognise the card reader when it is plugged in to
the USB socket. Very occasionally, sometimes after several minutes, up
pops the icon showing the reader has been seen.

There are several items connected to the computer, via a powered USB
hub, all of which are recognised but not the card reader. I tried
plugging the reader into another socket on the computer just in case the
hub was the problem but that made no difference. I know the reader and
the card are in good condition because they have been tested and found
to work on another computer also running Ubuntu 9.04.

I suppose it is possible that one or other of the items plugged into the
hub may be the cause of the problem but I wondered if anyone could be
kind enough to comment.
