There is, of course, always the terminal alternative:

sudo poweroff
sudo shutdown -h now

to shutdown or:

sudo shutdown -r now
sudo reboot

to reboot (that's two examples for each. Always useful to know if you're 
dropped to tty1 for some reason ;)
