The other thing to try to help speed things up is to disable DRI in your xorg.conf file. I have an X31 too and find scrolling in Jaunty unbearably slow for terminals and firefox. I disabled DRI as a work around for a mesa bug affecting mythtv and it helps the scroll problem too.
