I use Fasthosts as my ISP; they have their own DNS, and don't use
Netservices (I rang to check).

I've been digging about a bit, and it looks like the Netservices' DNS is
used by various firms. (I'm wondering whether I didn't latch on to it
somewhere as a DNS that provided an anonymous service. Does that ring
any bells with anyone?)

As for the contents of /etc/resolv.conf, it gets modified if you go to
System>Administration>Network>DNS, and 'add' DNS IPs there. That's
where the Netservices IPs were listed as the DNSs, and where I replaced
it with the Fasthosts DNS IPs (primary and secondary).

But I found that all the computers on the LAN had the same
/etc/resolv.conf - and I've variously got Gutsy, Hardy, and Debian Etch
installed on desktops and laptops. I didn't set the networks up
manually, so I can only think that the settings in /etc/resolv.conf must
be read from the router DNS IP settings during installation. (The
common denominator is, of course, NetworkManager. Presumably that's
what's picking up the settings?)
