Typical network engineer's quick check: Hold the cable ends up so that they're facing the same way (both clips facing away from you) Look at the colours of the wires inside the network cable (there should be 8. If the colour pattern (left to right) matches, then it's a straight cable. If four colours are out of place (left to right) in one cable than the other, then it's crossover. If the colours are completely reversed (left to right becomes right to left on the other cable) then it's a rollover cable.
