This sounds like error messages from the "fsck" program. Fsck does a similar job as "scandisk" on Windows, in that it checks the file system on the disk for inconsistencies or errors. The errors could be due to corruption as a result of an unclean shutdown or may be indicative of a failing hard disk. If you boot the machine to the grub menu, press escape and then choose recovery.
