This sounds like error messages from the "fsck" program. Fsck does a similar 
job as "scandisk" on Windows, in that it checks the file system on the disk 
for inconsistencies or errors.

The errors could be due to corruption as a result of an unclean shutdown or 
may be indicative of a failing hard disk.

If you boot the machine to the grub menu, press escape and then choose 
recovery. Once at the recovery console you should be able to run fsck 
against the disk that has a problem.

fsck /dev/sda

(or it could be /dev/hda, or something else if you have more than one disk 
in your machine).
