Hey Garry, As I said above it turned out the problem wasn't with Ubuntu Satanic Edition but with the Power Management in Ubuntu. "Blank Screen" on "When laptop is closed" is definitely the cause of this (although it may only apply to the intel driver as I haven't tried it with vesa).
I'd like to take a moment to congratulate you on Ubuntu Satanic Edition. I personally use the bootup/down part and the Eternal Damnation screensaver (as the rest doesn't match my specific tastes) and these work a treat.
