I note that under Ubuntu Gutsy this program is available in the Ubuntu 
repository and can thus be installed via Synaptic.

Once installed it appears to not have a menu item, so you can run it by 
pressing ALT+F2 and then type 'fldigi' in the box then click "Run".
 
Under Ubuntu you can add it to the menu by right clicking the "Applications" 
menu and choose "Edit menus". You can then choose a menu and click "Add 
item" and add a new icon for fldigi.
