The problem was that my gfx card was doing some wierd scaling. The resolution
on the screen was 1280x768, but my desktop was at 800x600 and being scaled by
my card to the output resolution. I looked all through xorg.conf and there was
nothing about scaling, virtual resolutions or metamodes so I don't have a clue
what was going on, I guess it's just some wierd nvidia thing. Under windows DVI
-> HDMI cable worked fine. I'm just using standard DVI -> VGA cable atm which
works fine under Ubuntu and I probably wouldnt be able to tell the difference
anyway.
