I guess you could install from the created image into a QEMU image.
Alan Pope has a blog entry about QEMU, if you're not familiar with it.

To convince myself that the cd image is equivalent, I would install
one QEMU image from the original (k)ubuntu CD, and upgrade it. Then I
would dump a list of packages from dpkg (can't remember the
command-line option at the mo). Ahh, just remembered that Synaptic can
dump a list of packages too. I guess you could use an existing system
rather than a QEMU image, if you have one with the correct packages.

Then I would install the aptoncd image into another QEMU image and
dump the list of packages again. Comparing the two lists should prove
one way or the other...
