I'm not sure which release of Ubuntu you're running, but you may want to install one of the following packages: network-manager-gnome network-manager-kde They give you a nice system tray applet that lets you select between wired or wireless connections, and easily configure your wireless encryption type (WEP/WPA) and encryption keys.
