Hi Simon, actually mysql.1 comes from upstream. This remains
undocumented in that man page. It also isn't documented in the upstream
manual:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/mysql-command-options.html

But it is referenced at the top as something that is shared among many
utilities, and a link is here:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/option-files.html#option-file-
options

So while this is not the most awesome reference, it is suggested in the
"SEE ALSO" in the bottom of the man page.

I'm going to mark this as Confirmed / Low. This needs to be forwarded
upstream, and ideally a new man page of mysql_defaults_options should be
created and referenced from all the other man pages.
