As you discovered when doing these tests, the test cases are written for Ubuntu. Just as you never saw the HUD or Unity screens, many other things must be mentally changed to follow the tests. Xubuntu will not have Unity, HUD, gear icon, etc. Since the tests are written specifically for Ubuntu, many things will have to change to test for Xubuntu. I would suggest directing these questions to either #xubuntu-devel on IRC or to the Xubuntu mailing list (1). The Xubuntu developers will then be able to tell you if the assumptions are correct. To the best of my knowledge, most of those developers do not follow this QA mailing list.
