First of all, I must say this is not the proper list, this is qa list, for this type of support, try with ubuntu users list.
Second, now thata you asked, you may know that there are several things ubuntu doesn't do by default. For example, if you go to system conf-> software sources, you will find out that there aren't activated all of them.
About flash-player, you may install flasplayer* packages. And about vlc, it has its own package.
To use other external sources, use add-apt-repository, and don't forget to update.

I hope this helps someway,

Hi everyone, my name is Kofi

I just installed the latest Unbutu 11.10 which I am currently using to access the web now. I must commend the Ubuntu and Canonical team for doing such a wonderful work with the interface. ITs a great job. I am, however experiencing a few issues in getting 3rd party software to install on my PC. The software center which handles all software and is associated with apt-url extensions, cannot, in my case help me to install software from the web. I wanted to install Skype, VLC, Picasa, Adobe Flash 11 and a few other software but when the software center recognises the software, the install button is blocked (unclickable) and as such cannot get the software to install. Is is s o with the softwares also featured already in the software center database. How can I  fix this issue. AS at now am only able to install software via the terminal. Help please.
