I suspect you're right, that they will need a brief first-boot tutorial. But, if you know that Ubuntu Touch uses all the edges, just with that one piece of knowledge, you can discover all the gestures it uses frequently. They could almost get away with a single screen on first boot, which points this out, and you would be able to work out all the gestures from there.
