Hi all !

For your information, Dell has the same crazy/mean/surprising price
politic in France. that's very disappointing of them :-(

In France, selling some service bundled with hardware is against the law
if you can't buy one without the other. But since win95 dealers have
been selling computers with Windows pre-installed and none has moved
against that. "Now" that several alternatives do exist, some people and
more and more of them try hard to get refunded of the MS-tax, arguing
that it is prohibited by our laws and is even written in the French
version of the Windows End User license Agreement.

Recently, 3 different cases went in front of the judges for trial. Two
cases for Asus France and one for Acer France. In each case, the
Taiwanese companies proposed to be sent back the laptop for them to
reformat and they will send it back to their owner with some 20€ for the
MS Win License. So they went for trial, the quick-kind of trial where
they defended themselves. All 3 won and get at least 200€ back, for
MS-tax, for other software tax (Norton, WinDVD and things like that).
A couple of weeks ago, a big consumer-organization was in court against
a big reseller. The judgment is expected soon. This organization has
also filled HP for same reason : selling computer without the
possibility for the customer to buy it without buying unwanted software.

For those of you who can read French here are some interesting links on
the subject :

refund :
