I have become aware that Edubuntu 8.04 no longer offers a 'Live CD'. I do know that it is a simple matter to install Ubuntu and then the Edubuntu desktop etc and the add on CD now offered makes that easy too.

However, from a 'Marketing' point of view, the loss of a demonstrable item such as a Live CD is rather sad.

Alan,

I appreciate that in a pure marketing sense that this is a set back.

I understand that ths decision was made in the consultation with the Edubuntu community council and was driven by the following upsides:

* More language-packs on the add-on CD (critical outside the UK)
* More educational software on the add-on CD
* Better quality QA on the core install by not obliging us to run testing on two seperate install images.

For many education uses, Ubuntu out of the box is an appropriate image and the Live CD can be used for that.

As you point out there are costs associated with this decision and one is the loss of the Edubuntu live CD experience.
Education, in UK anyway, is almost wall to wall microsoft, and I would like to remind the Edubuntu team (and others) how useful the Live CDs are for credible marketing.
With regards to the use of FLOSS in UK schools we remain committed to helping promote this through support for community work and advancing the cause with organisations like BECTA.
