I was just reading through the technical overview of Karmic: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicKoala/TechnicalOverview And I noticed that Scott James Remnant, the creator of this group, is the author of the highly praised new Ubuntu component Upstart. You can read more about it here, but basically it is making Ubuntu systems start up much more quickly. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReplacementInit?action=show&redirect=upstart I'm personally enjoying the improvement, and I hear a lot of people are impressed by it. it is only at version .6.3, but it has already accomplished a lot.
