If you are using Live CD then you can save your documents in a USB drive..... The only thing is you cant save the settings that you have made.
If you use Virtual Machine or any other installed OS [USB] are H/W dependent. Using any pre installed OS Disk [USB] or VM is not a good choice if you want to run the same OS in Different H/W.
