Which Ubuntu edition were you using? And as a last resort, if you can't make it with mandriva nor ubuntu, you can also try with opensuse, it has great support for laptops: http://www.opensuse.org Download the 32-bit DVD (3.7GB) or the "Live Gnome" (a 700MB CD).
